Who made the theory of the composition of underwater photography in the book Underwater Photographer?

Martin Edge who created the theory of composition underwater, he is an experienced writer and photographer who shares knowledge and techniques that have proven effective in the field.

What is Under water Composition on The Underwater Photographer ?

Underwater composition refers to the arrangement of visual elements within an underwater photograph to create a visually appealing and effective image. It involves using techniques such as framing, the rule of thirds, leading lines, and perspective to enhance the subject and overall impact of the photograph. Good composition helps convey the story, emotion, and beauty of the underwater environment, making the image more engaging for viewers.

When did Martin Edge research on underwater photography?

Martin Edge started exploring underwater photography in the late 1980s. His passion for the underwater world sparked his desire to learn and share techniques in this field. This journey led to the publication of his book The Underwater Photographer, which first came out in 1992. Since then, he’s kept honing his skills and making significant contributions to underwater photography.

Where is an interesting and easy place to get a composition spot for underwater photography?

All underwater photography composition spots can be found in various locations such as coral reefs, shipwrecks, or other marine environments that offer many composition opportunities. Each of those locations has unique elements that can be used in the composition, such as rock shapes or marine life.

Why Does Martin Edge often tilting his camera to get the photos?

Underwater, the visual clues that determine orientation are not as strong. If there are no visual clues to the horizon, the viewer is unable to determine the original orientation of the subject. The reason the writer tilting his macro and close up subjects is to achieve a strong, diagonally orientated composition in the viewfinder. .

How to determine framing techniques, use of space and viewing angles ?

Using natural elements to frame the subject or utilizing negative space to improve focus on the subject and Experiment with different angles and perspectives to find the most interesting and effective composition.

He explains how placing the subject right, framing it well, and using light effectively can make a huge difference in the final image. Edge encourages photographers to keep it simple, removing distractions and focusing on the subject. He also touches on how different angles and perspectives can make a photo more interesting. Overall, the chapter shows that combining technical skills with creativity in composition is key to capturing great underwater shots.

Reason

Martin Edge wrote the composition of The Underwater Photographer to help photographers understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with shooting underwater. Underwater environments are visually complex and ever-changing, so mastering composition becomes crucial for creating clear, impactful images. Edge wanted to guide photographers in developing an eye for framing, positioning, and using light effectively to bring out the best in their subjects. By focusing on composition, Edge aims to provide practical techniques while encouraging artistic creativity. He understands that underwater photography isn’t just about technical precision, but about telling a visual story, and composition plays a key role in making that happen.
